BPMN 2.0 Connecting Objects

The connecting objects are subdivided into the following three groups:

  • Sequence Flow
  • Message Flow
  • Association

Sequence Flow

The sequence flows define the order of the individual steps in a process execution. The following variants are distinguished:

Sequence Flow

The Sequence Flow defines the sequence of execution.

Conditional Flow

The Conditional Flow contains a condition that defines when it is traversed.

Default Flow

The Default Flow usually occurs in combination with conditional flows and is run through if all other conditions do not apply.

Message Flow

A Message Flow symbolizes the exchange of information or objects between two processes. A message flow between pools, activities and message events (see Events) can be modeled.

Association

Associations associate artifacts with flow objects, sometimes with connecting objects (for example, when specifying conditions of complex gateways).
